Goulbourn Township Meeting Minutes - 1971
The first running of the race in 1971 was organized by the Goulbourn township to commemorate the new wear on the river. The year was success, with 40 entries. Building on this success, the race was made an annual event. At the time registration fees were only $1.
The winners of the first race were Kermit Moore and Mike Whittington of Ottawa.
